01 · How Amazon ECS pricing works

What you pay for

  • No charge for the ECS control plane, clusters, services or task definitions.
  • Capacity: EC2 instances (On-Demand, Spot, Savings Plans), Fargate vCPU/GB-hours, or ECS Managed Instances (EC2 price plus a per-instance management fee).
  • ECS Anywhere per managed on-premises instance-hour; EBS volumes attached to tasks; ALB/NLB; CloudWatch Container Insights.

Common cost traps

  • Under-utilised container instances: you pay for the whole EC2 instance however few tasks run on it.
  • Container Insights metrics and logs can add a noticeable CloudWatch bill.
  • Image pulls through NAT gateways add $0.045/GB processing on every deployment and scale-out.
  • One load balancer per service multiplies ALB hourly fees.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Use capacity providers with managed scaling and binpack placement to keep instances full.
  • Use Graviton instances and Spot capacity providers for stateless services.
  • Add ECR, S3 and CloudWatch VPC endpoints to avoid NAT charges.
  • Share an ALB across services with listener rules.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. ECS itself is free on all plans. The EC2 capacity can use the EC2 Free Tier (legacy 750 hours of t2/t3.micro, or Free Tier credits on new accounts). Fargate has no Free Tier.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover Amazon ECS?

ECS has no control-plane fee. The EC2 instances, Fargate tasks, ECS Managed Instances management fees, ECS Anywhere fees, EBS volumes and load balancers behind your services are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
