01 · How AWS Systems Manager pricing works
What you pay for
- Free features: Session Manager, Run Command, Patch Manager, State Manager, Inventory and standard parameters for EC2 and on-premises nodes (advanced on-premises instances aside).
- Parameter Store advanced parameters ($0.05 each per month) and higher-throughput API calls ($0.05 per 10,000).
- Just-in-time node access per node-hour (tiered), OpsCenter per OpsItem, Incident Manager per response plan, Automation per step and script second, Change Manager per request, AppConfig per request and per configuration received.
Common cost traps
- Enabling higher-throughput Parameter Store bills every API call, including those from SDK lookups on each request.
- Just-in-time node access bills per node-hour across the fleet once enabled.
- Automations running every few minutes add per-step charges.
Ways to reduce cost
- Keep standard parameters unless you need advanced features; cache parameters in applications.
- Scope JIT node access to accounts and nodes that need it.
- Batch automation work into fewer steps.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Most core Systems Manager features have no charge on any plan. Paid features have no separate free allowance in the data, apart from Automation and some AppConfig quotas listed on the pricing page; new-plan accounts can pay from Free Tier credits.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover AWS Systems Manager?
Paid Systems Manager features (advanced parameters and higher-throughput API calls, OpsCenter, Incident Manager, Automation steps, Change Manager, AppConfig, just-in-time node access, Distributor) are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
Check my creditsExcluded charges & conditions
- Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
- AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
- Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
- Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.
Illustrative credit runway
Single-service examples from the supplied data, not your calculator result. Months = credit amount ÷ monthly cost, before credit expiry. Credits can expire before these theoretical months are used; coverage and other AWS services can shorten runway.
| Usage profile | Monthly estimate | $10,000 | $25,000 | $100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | $45.00 | 222.2 mo. | 555.6 mo. | 2,222.2 mo. |

Small profile assumptions
200 advanced parameters, 5 M Parameter Store API calls (higher throughput), 5,000 automation steps | Advanced parameters: 200 parameter-months x $0.05 = $10.00; Parameter Store API calls: 500 10k calls x $0.05 = $25.00; Automation steps: 5,000 steps x $0.002 = $10.00 | Total ~$45.00/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Medium profile assumptions
Just-in-time node access for 50 nodes 24/7, 2,000 OpsItems, 3 Incident Manager response plans, 50 M AppConfig requests | JIT node access: 36,500 node-hours x $0.0137 = $500.05; OpsItems: 2 1k OpsItems x $2.97 = $5.94; Incident Manager response plans: 3 plan-months x $7 = $21.00; AppConfig requests: 50,000,000 requests x $0.0000002 = $10.00 | Total ~$536.99/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Large profile assumptions
JIT node access for 90 nodes 24/7 (first tier), 200,000 automation steps, 1,000 change requests | JIT node access: 65,700 node-hours x $0.0137 = $900.09; Automation steps: 200,000 steps x $0.002 = $400.00; Change requests: 1,000 requests x $0.296 = $296.00 | Total ~$1,596.09/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
