What credits cover, and what they don't
- Compute: EC2, Lambda, ECS, Fargate
- Databases: RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB
- Storage: S3, EBS
- AI models: Amazon Bedrock on-demand usage
- Networking: CloudFront, data transfer
- Most first-party AWS services
- AWS Marketplace third-party software
- Route 53 domain name registration
- Upfront Reserved Instances and Savings Plans
- Business or Enterprise Support plans
- Taxes added to your bill
- Mining or other prohibited use
Does a marketplaces company qualify?
- Product startups (software or hardware you sell) qualify for Activate. Agencies, consultancies and dev shops that bill by the hour usually don't, unless they're building their own product.
- Your company is usually under 10 years old, pre-Series B for the Provider tier, and hasn't had Activate credits before.
- Past the startup stage? Established marketplaces companies can look at business and migration funding instead.
- Nonprofit or researcher? The AWS Imagine Grant and Cloud Credit for Research are separate from Activate.

Where marketplaces startups burn credits fastest
Images served from S3 directly
Serving full-size product photos without a CDN costs more and loads slowly.
Fix: Put CloudFront in front of S3 and resize images on the fly.
Provisioning for Black Friday all year
Sizing servers for peak traffic means paying for it 11 months of the year.
Fix: Use auto scaling and load test a month before big sales.
Self-managed search clusters
An OpenSearch cluster sized for the full catalogue runs 24/7.
Fix: Start with database search or OpenSearch Serverless and right-size nodes.
NAT Gateway data charges
Every private subnet sending traffic to the internet through a NAT Gateway pays about $0.045 per GB on top of the hourly fee. Pulling container images or calling third-party APIs from private subnets adds up fast.
Fix: Use VPC endpoints for S3, ECR and DynamoDB, and keep chatty services in public subnets behind security groups where it is safe.
Unbounded CloudWatch logs
Debug-level logs from every request are ingested at about $0.50 per GB and kept forever by default.
Fix: Set log retention to 14 or 30 days and lower log levels in production.
Staging that never sleeps
Copies of production for staging, QA and demos often run 24/7 at full size, doubling or tripling the bill.
Fix: Schedule non-production environments to stop at night and weekends with Instance Scheduler, or use smaller instance sizes.

Rules and gotchas for marketplaces
- Payments stay with your processor
- Card data should go straight to your payment provider to keep PCI scope small.
- Credits don't pay for Amazon marketplace fees
- AWS credits cover cloud services only, not Amazon.com seller fees or ads.
Compliance for marketplaces
- AWS paperwork
- Most stores avoid PCI scope by using a payment provider's hosted checkout.
- Eligible services
- Keep card data with the payment provider, not on your AWS account.
- Not paid by credits
- Audits, certifications and third-party compliance tools.

Questions
Is there a special AWS credit programme for marketplaces startups?
No dedicated AWS programme for marketplaces is listed right now. Standard AWS Activate applies: $1,000 (up to $5,000) for self-funded startups, up to $200,000 through an Activate Provider.
How much in AWS credits can a marketplaces startup get?
Up to $200,000 through an Activate Provider, or $1,000 through Activate Founders.
Do AWS credits cover what a marketplaces product runs on?
Usually yes. A typical setup (Containers or a headless storefront, RDS, CloudFront, OpenSearch for product search) is covered by promotional credits. Marketplace purchases, support plans and taxes are not.
How long will credits last for a marketplaces startup?
At about $300/month (MVP), $25,000 lasts around 83 months, though credits usually expire after 12 to 24 months.
Can I stay compliant while using AWS credits?
Yes. Credits don't change your compliance duties. Most stores avoid PCI scope by using a payment provider's hosted checkout. Credits never pay for audits or third-party compliance tools.
What if AWS rejects my marketplaces application?
Try a different route: an Activate Provider, another niche programme, Google for Startups Cloud Program or Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub, or our partner match.
