01 · How Amazon S3 pricing works
What you pay for
- Storage per GB-month by class: Standard ($0.023 first 50 TB), Intelligent-Tiering, Standard-IA ($0.0125), One Zone-IA, Glacier Instant/Flexible/Deep Archive ($0.00099).
- Requests: PUT/COPY/POST/LIST ($0.005 per 1,000 on Standard) and GET ($0.0004 per 1,000); higher for IA and Glacier classes.
- Retrieval fees for IA and Glacier classes; minimum storage durations (30/90/180 days) and minimum object sizes (128 KB) on some classes.
- Data transfer out to the internet (from $0.09/GB), cross-Region replication transfer, and S3 Transfer Acceleration.
- Management and analytics: Intelligent-Tiering monitoring per object, Inventory, Storage Lens advanced metrics, S3 Tables/Metadata, Batch Operations.
Common cost traps
- Lifecycle transitions are charged per object, so moving millions of small objects to Glacier can cost more than the storage saved.
- IA and Glacier classes have minimum storage durations: deleting early is billed as if the object stayed 30, 90 or 180 days.
- Versioning keeps every overwritten and deleted version billing until a lifecycle rule expires it.
- Incomplete multipart uploads keep billing as storage until aborted.
- Request-heavy workloads (small objects, LIST-heavy tools) can cost more in requests than in storage.
- Serving public content directly from S3 pays $0.09/GB egress; CloudFront is often cheaper and includes 1 TB/month free.
Ways to reduce cost
- Use S3 Intelligent-Tiering for data with unknown access patterns (objects under 128 KB are not monitored or tiered).
- Add lifecycle rules to expire noncurrent versions and abort incomplete multipart uploads after a few days.
- Aggregate small objects before archiving to cut per-object transition and request fees.
- Put CloudFront in front of public buckets and use gateway VPC endpoints (free) for in-VPC access instead of NAT.
- Use Storage Lens free metrics to find large, cold or unversioned-cleanup candidates.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Legacy accounts: 5 GB of S3 Standard, 20,000 GET and 2,000 PUT requests per month for 12 months. New-plan accounts pay S3 from Free Tier credits. Always free: 100 GB/month of internet egress aggregated across services; data transfer in is free.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover Amazon S3?
S3 storage, requests, retrievals, management features (Inventory, Storage Lens advanced, Intelligent-Tiering monitoring), replication and data transfer are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

- AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.

Amazon S3 pricing FAQ
Do credits cover S3 Glacier retrieval fees?
Yes. Retrievals, requests and storage for all S3 classes are eligible usage.
Why is my S3 bill higher than storage x price?
Requests, lifecycle transitions, retrievals, old object versions, incomplete multipart uploads and data transfer are billed separately from GB-month storage.
Is data transfer into S3 free?
Yes, inbound transfer from the internet is free. Transfer out to the internet, to other Regions and through some endpoints is charged.
Is the 5 GB S3 free tier still available?
Only for accounts created before 15 July 2025, during their first 12 months. Newer accounts use Free Tier credits instead.
