Africa. The 2023 cohort came from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, South Africa, Cameroon and Egypt.

The credits are AWS Activate levels, not separate grants. Every applicant who registered before the deadline got access to the USD 10,000 Activate level. Startups accepted into the acceleration programme got the USD 25,000 level. Levels don't stack: a startup already at USD 10K gains only USD 15K by moving to USD 25K. The Activate maximum per startup is USD 100K.

  2. 2

Apply with traction and team details.

  3. 3

What catches founders out

  • Intakes aren't yearly fixed dates.
  • Credits are only part of the value; the investor demo matters more.

What founders report Show

Summarised from public founder posts. Anecdotal, not official AWS policy.

Gotchas

  • (From the official terms, not anecdotal) The '$25K' is an Activate level, not new money: startups already holding Activate credits get only the difference
  • (Terms) The terms said the top 15 would graduate to the programme, but 25 were selected

04 · Credits & stacking

What the credits cover

Covered

  • AWS services under AWS Activate credit rules

Not covered

  • Amazon Mechanical Turk
  • AWS Managed Services
  • Ineligible AWS Support (Enterprise, Unified Operations, Enterprise On-Ramp, resold support, Partner-Led Support)
  • AWS Marketplace
  • AWS Professional Services
  • AWS Training
  • AWS Certification
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration or transfer
  • Services used for cryptocurrency mining
  • Upfront fees for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances
  • Any other services designated by your AWS contracting entity

Stacking with other credits

Can combine with

  • AWS Activate (the credits are Activate levels)

Can't combine with

  • Separate stacking with existing Activate credits: levels are cumulative, so credits already received are subtracted

Lifetime cap: AWS Activate cap of USD 100K per startup (2023 terms). Accelerator credits count toward the Activate level.
