01 · How Amazon VPC pricing works
What you pay for
- The VPC, subnets, route tables, security groups and gateway endpoints for S3 and DynamoDB are free.
- Public IPv4 addresses: $0.005 per IP-hour, in use or idle (contiguous blocks more).
- Interface endpoints (PrivateLink): $0.01 per endpoint per AZ-hour plus $0.01/GB; resource and GWLB endpoints similar.
- Peering transfer across AZs/Regions, Traffic Mirroring sessions, Reachability Analyzer ($0.10 per analysis), IPAM advanced tier, NAT gateways, Site-to-Site VPN.
Common cost traps
- Every public IPv4 address bills about $3.65/month, including idle Elastic IPs and IPs auto-assigned to instances and load balancers.
- An interface endpoint deployed in 3 AZs costs about $21.90/month before data, so dozens of endpoints add up.
- Traffic between AZs (including through peering) is $0.01/GB in each direction.
- NAT gateway processing charges apply to traffic that could use free gateway endpoints for S3 and DynamoDB.
Ways to reduce cost
- Add S3 and DynamoDB gateway endpoints to every VPC with private subnets.
- Use IPv6 or private addressing where possible and release idle Elastic IPs; use IPAM's free tier to find public IPs.
- Centralise interface endpoints in a shared-services VPC.
- Keep chatty components in the same AZ.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Legacy accounts: 750 hours/month of public IPv4 for 12 months. New-plan accounts pay from Free Tier credits. Core VPC constructs and gateway endpoints are free for everyone.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover Amazon VPC?
VPC charges (public IPv4 addresses, interface/resource/Gateway Load Balancer endpoints, peering transfer, Traffic Mirroring, Reachability and Network Access Analyzer, IPAM, NAT gateways, VPN) are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
Check my creditsExcluded charges & conditions
- Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
- AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
- Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
- Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.
Illustrative credit runway
Single-service examples from the supplied data, not your calculator result. Months = credit amount ÷ monthly cost, before credit expiry. Credits can expire before these theoretical months are used; coverage and other AWS services can shorten runway.
| Usage profile | Monthly estimate | $10,000 | $25,000 | $100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | $44.30 | 225.7 mo. | 564.3 mo. | 2,257.3 mo. |

Small profile assumptions
4 public IPv4 addresses 24/7, 2 interface endpoints in 2 AZs, 50 GB through endpoints | Public IPv4: 2,920 IP-hours x $0.005 = $14.60; Interface endpoint AZ-hours: 2,920 AZ-hours x $0.01 = $29.20; Endpoint data: 50 GB x $0.01 = $0.50 | Total ~$44.30/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Medium profile assumptions
20 public IPv4, 8 interface endpoints x 3 AZs, 2 TB through endpoints, 3 TB peering transfer across AZs | Public IPv4: 14,600 IP-hours x $0.005 = $73.00; Interface endpoint AZ-hours: 17,520 AZ-hours x $0.01 = $175.20; Endpoint data: 2,048 GB x $0.01 = $20.48; VPC peering transfer: 3,072 GB x $0.01 = $30.72 | Total ~$299.40/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Large profile assumptions
100 public IPv4, 20 interface endpoints x 3 AZs, 20 TB endpoint data, 2 NAT gateways with 10 TB processed | Public IPv4: 73,000 IP-hours x $0.005 = $365.00; Interface endpoint AZ-hours: 43,800 AZ-hours x $0.01 = $438.00; Endpoint data: 20,480 GB x $0.01 = $204.80; NAT gateway hours: 1,460 hours x $0.045 = $65.70; NAT data processed: 10,240 GB x $0.045 = $460.80 | Total ~$1,534.30/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
04 · Questions
Amazon VPC pricing FAQ
Is a VPC free?
Yes. The VPC itself, subnets, route tables, internet gateways, security groups and S3/DynamoDB gateway endpoints are free. You pay for public IPv4 addresses, interface endpoints, NAT gateways, VPN and transfer.
Why am I billed for public IPv4?
Since February 2024 AWS charges $0.005 per hour for every public IPv4 address, attached or not.
Interface or gateway endpoint for S3?
Gateway endpoints are free and work for in-VPC access. Interface endpoints cost per AZ-hour and per GB but work from on-premises and other Regions.
Do credits cover VPC charges?
Yes, all VPC charges are eligible usage.
