AWS Data Transfer pricing calculator

Internet, Cross-Region & Cross-AZ Costs. Estimate your costs using AWS list prices.

01 · How AWS Data Transfer pricing works

What you pay for

  • Internet egress, tiered per account per month ($0.09/GB first 10 TB in us-east-1, then $0.085, $0.07, $0.05); inbound is free.
  • Inter-Region transfer, billed on the source side ($0.02/GB from us-east-1 to us-west-2 or eu-west-1; $0.01 to us-east-2).
  • Cross-AZ transfer within a Region: $0.01/GB out of the source AZ and $0.01/GB into the destination AZ.
  • Service-specific transfer: CloudFront, Direct Connect, NAT processing, PrivateLink and Transit Gateway processing are priced separately.

Common cost traps

  • Cross-AZ traffic is charged on both sides, so replication between AZs costs $0.02 per GB moved.
  • Inter-Region replication (S3 CRR, database replicas, backups) bills every byte.
  • Egress through a NAT gateway pays NAT processing on top of egress.
  • Traffic to a public IP or Elastic IP in the same Region is billed as if it crossed AZs, even between your own instances.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Serve public content through CloudFront (1 TB free, lower rates, free origin fetches from AWS).
  • Keep chatty services in one AZ or use AZ-aware routing; compress payloads.
  • Use private IPs and VPC endpoints inside a Region.
  • Use Direct Connect for large steady hybrid flows.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Always free on both plans: 100 GB per month of data transfer out to the internet, aggregated across all services and Regions (except China and GovCloud), plus 1 TB per month from CloudFront. Data transfer in is free.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover AWS Data Transfer?

Data transfer charges (internet egress, cross-Region, cross-AZ) are billed per service but are ordinary AWS usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

Excluded charges & conditions
  • Partner, carrier and ISP charges outside AWS.
  • Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
  • AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
  • AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
  • Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.

Verification notes

  • Cross-AZ modelled as 2x the source rate to reflect both-sides billing; check service exceptions (for example ALB to targets, some managed services).
  • Runway prices come from the calculator repository snapshot rate card data-transfer (no AWS Price List mapping in the build). Confirm the main unit prices on https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/on-demand/#Data_Transfer before publishing.
