AWS credits for smart cities startups

Standard Activate appliesLast checked 3 October 2026

Smart cities startups can reach up to $200,000 through an Activate Provider. There's no dedicated AWS programme open right now, so the standard tiers apply.

Smart cities startups sell to governments, NGOs and communities, so procurement, accessibility and data location rules shape the stack more than raw scale.

Does a smart cities company qualify?

  • Product startups (software or hardware you sell) qualify for Activate. Agencies, consultancies and dev shops that bill by the hour usually don't, unless they're building their own product.
  • Your company is usually under 10 years old, pre-Series B for the Provider tier, and hasn't had Activate credits before.
  • Past the startup stage? Established smart cities companies can look at business and migration funding instead.
  • Nonprofit or researcher? The AWS Imagine Grant and Cloud Credit for Research are separate from Activate.

Questions

Is there a special AWS credit programme for smart cities startups?

No dedicated AWS programme for smart cities is listed right now. Standard AWS Activate applies: $1,000 (up to $5,000) for self-funded startups, up to $200,000 through an Activate Provider.

How much in AWS credits can a smart cities startup get?

Up to $200,000 through an Activate Provider, or $1,000 through Activate Founders.

Do AWS credits cover what a smart cities product runs on?

Usually yes. A typical setup (Serverless app on Lambda and DynamoDB, S3, CloudFront; GovCloud only for regulated government data) is covered by promotional credits. Marketplace purchases, support plans and taxes are not.

How long will credits last for a smart cities startup?

At about $150/month (MVP), $25,000 lasts around 167 months, though credits usually expire after 12 to 24 months.

Can I stay compliant while using AWS credits?

Yes. Credits don't change your compliance duties. Government buyers may require FedRAMP-authorised services or AWS GovCloud (US). Credits never pay for audits or third-party compliance tools.

What if AWS rejects my smart cities application?

Try a different route: an Activate Provider, another niche programme, Google for Startups Cloud Program or Microsoft Tech for Social Impact (nonprofits), or our partner match.
