01 · How Amazon CloudFront pricing works

What you pay for

  • Pay-as-you-go: data transfer out by viewer geography (US/Canada/Mexico from $0.085/GB, tiered down to $0.02), HTTPS requests ($0.01 per 10,000 in the US).
  • Flat-rate plans (Free $0, Pro $15, Business $200, Premium $1,000 per month) bundle CDN, WAF, DDoS protection, DNS and edge compute with monthly allowances.
  • Edge compute: CloudFront Functions ($0.10 per million) and Lambda@Edge (requests plus GB-seconds).
  • Origin Shield requests, real-time logs, field-level encryption, dedicated IP custom SSL ($600/month), invalidations beyond 1,000 paths/month.

Common cost traps

  • Viewers outside North America and Europe pay much higher per-GB rates; South America, India and Australia can be 2-3x the US rate.
  • Low cache-hit ratios push traffic to the origin and add origin fetch and compute cost.
  • Lambda@Edge is billed at a higher GB-second rate than regular Lambda and runs on every matching request.
  • Invalidating more than 1,000 paths per month costs $0.005 per path; wildcard paths count as one.
  • Choosing a flat-rate plan with a smaller allowance than your traffic can throttle or require an upgrade; compare both models.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Raise cache TTLs and use cache policies that ignore unneeded headers, cookies and query strings.
  • Use Price Classes to exclude expensive edge Regions if your audience allows.
  • Use CloudFront Functions instead of Lambda@Edge for simple header and URL logic.
  • Compare the flat-rate plans with pay-as-you-go when you also need WAF and DDoS protection.
  • Enable Origin Shield only when many edge locations fetch the same objects.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Always free on both plans: 1 TB of data transfer out, 10 M HTTP/HTTPS requests and 2 M CloudFront Functions invocations per month. Separately, the flat-rate Free plan ($0) includes 1 M requests and 100 GB of transfer per month. Transfer from AWS origins (S3, EC2, ALB) to CloudFront is free.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover Amazon CloudFront?

CloudFront pay-as-you-go data transfer and requests, flat-rate plan fees, Lambda@Edge, CloudFront Functions, Origin Shield, real-time logs and dedicated IP custom SSL are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

Excluded charges & conditions
  • A CloudFront Security Savings Bundle is a monthly commitment; check how credits apply before buying.
  • Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
  • AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
  • AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
  • Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.

04 · Questions

Amazon CloudFront pricing FAQ

Is CloudFront cheaper than serving from S3 directly?

Usually yes for public content. US egress from CloudFront starts at $0.085/GB versus $0.09/GB from S3, CloudFront has a 1 TB/month always-free allowance, and caching reduces S3 requests.

What are the flat-rate plans?

Monthly plans (Free, Pro $15, Business $200, Premium $1,000) that bundle CDN, WAF, DDoS protection and other features with a set traffic and request allowance, with no overage charges for attacks. They are an alternative to pay-as-you-go pricing.

Do credits cover CloudFront?

Yes, pay-as-you-go usage and flat-rate plan fees are AWS charges and eligible for credits.

Does the 1 TB free tier apply to new accounts?

Yes. The CloudFront always-free allowance applies on both the new Free/Paid plans and legacy accounts.
