01 · How Amazon EventBridge pricing works
What you pay for
- Event bus: custom and partner events $1.00 per million (64 KB chunks); events from AWS services to the default bus are free.
- Pipes $0.40 per million requests (after filtering), Scheduler $1.00 per million invocations, API destinations $0.20 per million.
- Archive processing $0.10/GB plus storage, schema discovery, cross-Region and cross-account delivery.
Common cost traps
- Each 64 KB chunk of a payload is billed as one event.
- Targets (Lambda, Step Functions, SQS) are billed separately for every delivered event.
- Fan-out to several buses or Regions bills each delivery as a new event.
- Archives with no retention limit grow forever.
Ways to reduce cost
- Filter in Pipes before enrichment so you pay only for events that pass.
- Use specific event patterns to avoid invoking targets unnecessarily.
- Set archive retention.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Always free on both plans: AWS service events delivered to the default event bus, and 14 M Scheduler invocations per month. New-plan accounts can pay the rest from Free Tier credits.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover Amazon EventBridge?
EventBridge custom, partner and cross-account events, Pipes, Scheduler, API destinations, archive and replay, and schema discovery are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
Check my creditsExcluded charges & conditions
- Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
- AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
- Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
- Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.
Illustrative credit runway
Single-service examples from the supplied data, not your calculator result. Months = credit amount ÷ monthly cost, before credit expiry. Credits can expire before these theoretical months are used; coverage and other AWS services can shorten runway.
| Usage profile | Monthly estimate | $10,000 | $25,000 | $100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | $2.40 | 4,166.7 mo. | 10,416.7 mo. | 41,666.7 mo. |

Small profile assumptions
2 M custom events, 1 M Pipes requests, 1 M scheduled invocations (under the free 14 M) | Custom events: 2 million x $1 = $2.00; Pipes requests: 1 million x $0.4 = $0.40 | Total ~$2.40/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Medium profile assumptions
100 M custom events, 50 M Pipes requests, 20 M API destination calls, 200 GB archived | Custom events: 100 million x $1 = $100.00; Pipes requests: 50 million x $0.4 = $20.00; API destinations: 20 million x $0.2 = $4.00; Archive processing: 200 GB x $0.1 = $20.00; Archive storage: 200 GB-month x $0.023 = $4.60 | Total ~$148.60/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Large profile assumptions
1 B custom events, 500 M Pipes requests, 100 M Scheduler invocations beyond the free tier | Custom events: 1,000 million x $1 = $1,000.00; Pipes requests: 500 million x $0.4 = $200.00; Scheduler invocations: 100 million x $1 = $100.00 | Total ~$1,300.00/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
