Standard & FIFO Topics. Estimate your costs using AWS list prices.

01 · How Amazon SNS pricing works

What you pay for

  • Standard topic requests $0.50 per million (64 KB chunks); FIFO topics priced per publish and per GB of payload.
  • Deliveries per million by endpoint: HTTP/S $0.60, email $20, mobile push $0.50, Firehose $0.19; SQS and Lambda deliveries are free; SMS priced per message by country.
  • Payload-based filtering per GB, message archiving, data protection scanning, data transfer out.

Common cost traps

  • SMS costs vary widely by destination and can include registration fees; it is the usual source of SNS bill shocks.
  • Payload-based filtering is charged per GB scanned; attribute filtering is free.
  • Large messages are billed per 64 KB chunk.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Use SQS or Lambda subscriptions where possible (free delivery).
  • Use attribute-based filtering instead of payload filtering.
  • Set SMS spending limits and use email or push for non-urgent notices.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Always free on both plans: 1 M publishes, 100,000 HTTP/S deliveries, 1,000 email deliveries and 1 M mobile push deliveries per month. SMS is not free beyond any small country-specific allowance.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover Amazon SNS?

SNS publishes, deliveries (HTTP, email, mobile push, Firehose, SMS), FIFO topics, message filtering, archiving and data protection are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

  • AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
  • AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
