01 · How Amazon FSx pricing works
What you pay for
- Storage capacity per GB-month by file system type, deployment (single-AZ/multi-AZ) and media (SSD/HDD).
- Throughput capacity per MB/s-month (Windows, ONTAP, OpenZFS) or included per TiB (Lustre).
- Extra SSD IOPS, backup storage per GB-month, ONTAP capacity pool tiering and requests.
- Data transfer across AZs and Regions.
Common cost traps
- Throughput capacity is billed every hour at the provisioned level, even when idle.
- Multi-AZ roughly doubles storage and throughput rates (Windows SSD $0.23 vs $0.13/GB-month).
- Lustre scratch file systems have no replication; persistent types cost more but survive server failure.
- Backups are billed separately from file system storage and are kept until deleted.
Ways to reduce cost
- Use HDD storage for Windows home directories and general shares where latency is acceptable.
- Enable data deduplication on FSx for Windows to shrink billed storage.
- Size throughput to measured peak and adjust; it can be changed later.
- For Lustre linked to S3, use scratch file systems for short-lived jobs.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. No FSx Free Tier on legacy accounts; new-plan accounts can pay from Free Tier credits.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover Amazon FSx?
FSx for Windows File Server, Lustre, NetApp ONTAP and OpenZFS charges (storage, throughput capacity, SSD IOPS, backups, data transfer) are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
- Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
- Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.
Illustrative credit runway
Single-service examples from the supplied data, not your calculator result. Months = credit amount ÷ monthly cost, before credit expiry. Credits can expire before these theoretical months are used; coverage and other AWS services can shorten runway.

04 · Questions
Amazon FSx pricing FAQ
Which FSx type is cheapest?
It depends on the workload. FSx for Lustre HDD and Windows HDD have the lowest per-GB rates; ONTAP and OpenZFS add data reduction and tiering that change the effective price.
Is throughput charged separately?
Yes for Windows, ONTAP and OpenZFS (per MB/s-month). For Lustre, throughput is tied to the storage tier you choose.
Do credits cover FSx?
Yes. All FSx charges are AWS usage. Licences you bring are not.
Do backups cost extra?
Yes. Backups are billed per GB-month ($0.05 in us-east-1 for Windows and Lustre).
