Threat Detection & Protection Plans. Estimate your costs using AWS list prices.

01 · How Amazon GuardDuty pricing works

What you pay for

  • Foundational: $4 per million CloudTrail management events; VPC Flow Logs and DNS logs tiered per GB ($1.00 first 500 GB, down to $0.15).
  • S3 Protection per million S3 data events (tiered from $0.80); EKS Protection per million audit events (from $1.60).
  • Runtime Monitoring per vCPU-month; Malware Protection per GB scanned; RDS and Lambda protection per vCPU-hour or GB.

Common cost traps

  • Busy NAT or high-traffic VPCs produce large flow-log volumes even though GuardDuty reads them directly.
  • S3 Protection bills every data event on monitored buckets, including data lakes with billions of GETs.
  • Enabling all protection plans organization-wide multiplies cost across accounts and Regions.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Review the usage page at the end of the free trial before keeping every plan.
  • Enable S3 Protection where data sensitivity justifies it.
  • Consider Security Hub threat analytics pricing if you also use Security Hub Essentials.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. GuardDuty has a 30-day free trial per account and Region (including most protection plans). No always-free allowance; afterwards new-plan accounts can pay from Free Tier credits.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover Amazon GuardDuty?

GuardDuty foundational analysis and protection plans (S3, EKS, Runtime, Malware, RDS, Lambda) are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

  • AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
