01 · How Amazon Q pricing works
What you pay for
- Q Business: per user-month (Lite $3, Pro $20) plus index units per hour (Starter or Enterprise index).
- Q Developer: Free tier and Pro ($19 per user-month, includes 4,000 lines of code per month for transformations, extra lines $0.003).
- Amazon Q in QuickSight (author/reader Pro pricing) and Amazon Q in Connect (per voice minute or message).
Common cost traps
- Subscriptions are charged per user per month; users subscribed by group membership are counted even if they rarely use Q.
- Q Business indexes bill per unit-hour continuously.
- Q Developer transformation usage beyond the included lines of code is billed per line.
Ways to reduce cost
- Assign Pro only to users who need it; use Lite or the free tier for others.
- Size index units to document count and remove unused applications.
- Review subscription reports monthly.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Q Developer has an always-free tier with monthly limits on agentic requests and code transformation. Q Business offers no permanent free tier; trials have been offered. Accounts on the new plans can pay subscriptions from Free Tier credits if AWS bills them.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover Amazon Q?
Amazon Q Business and Q Developer subscriptions, Q Business index units, Amazon Q in QuickSight and Amazon Q in Connect are billed by AWS and generally offset by credits; check that your credit lists Amazon Q. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
