01 · How Amazon Bedrock pricing works

What you pay for

  • On-demand inference per 1,000 input and output tokens (per image/second for image and video models), varying by model and Region; cross-Region inference profiles may differ.
  • Batch inference (typically about 50% of on-demand for supported models), prompt caching (discounted cache reads, cache-write charges), service tiers such as Flex and Priority where offered.
  • Provisioned Throughput per model unit per hour, with optional 1- or 6-month commitments; custom model import and fine-tuning (training tokens, storage per month).
  • Platform features: Knowledge Bases (plus the vector store), Guardrails per 1,000 text units, Agents, Flows per node transition, Data Automation, model evaluation.

Common cost traps

  • Output tokens cost 4-5x input tokens on most models; verbose answers and agent loops drive spend.
  • Agents and RAG pipelines resend long context (system prompt, retrieved chunks, history) on every call.
  • Provisioned Throughput bills per hour whether or not you send traffic, and commitments cannot be cancelled.
  • Knowledge Bases on OpenSearch Serverless carry a minimum OCU charge even when idle.
  • Larger models are often chosen for tasks a smaller model handles; Claude Sonnet input is about 85x Nova Micro input here.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Route easy requests to small models (Nova Micro/Lite, Haiku) and reserve large models for hard cases.
  • Use prompt caching for long, repeated system prompts and documents.
  • Use batch inference for offline jobs.
  • Cap max output tokens and trim retrieved context.
  • Check that your credits cover third-party models before scaling them, or use Amazon models where quality allows.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Bedrock has no Free Tier allowance in the legacy model. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 can spend Free Tier credits on Bedrock models billed by AWS; third-party models sold via Marketplace may not be usable on the Free plan.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover Amazon Bedrock?

Bedrock on-demand and batch inference, Provisioned Throughput, model customisation, Knowledge Bases, Guardrails, Agents and Flows are eligible usage. Activate credits explicitly cover third-party foundation models on Bedrock even though they are sold through AWS Marketplace; other promotional credits may not, because Marketplace charges are excluded by the general terms. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

Excluded charges & conditions
  • Third-party models billed through AWS Marketplace when your credit is not an Activate credit (check the credit's service list).
  • Vector stores and services used by Knowledge Bases or Agents (OpenSearch Serverless, Aurora, S3, Lambda) are billed by those services.
  • Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
  • AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
  • AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
  • Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.

Amazon Bedrock pricing FAQ

Do Activate credits cover Claude, Llama and other third-party models?

Yes. The Activate FAQ states that credits apply to third-party foundation models on Amazon Bedrock even though they are sold through AWS Marketplace. Other promotional credits follow the general rule that Marketplace charges are excluded, so check your credit's terms.

How are Bedrock tokens priced?

Per 1,000 input tokens and per 1,000 output tokens, by model and Region. In this data Nova Lite is $0.00006 input / $0.00024 output per 1K tokens; Claude Sonnet 4.5 is $0.003 / $0.015.

When does Provisioned Throughput make sense?

When you need guaranteed capacity or a custom model, and your traffic is high and steady enough to keep the model units busy. Otherwise on-demand is usually cheaper.

Can I use Bedrock on the AWS Free plan?

Free Tier credits can be spent on AWS-billed models. Marketplace-sold third-party models may be limited on the Free plan; upgrading to the Paid plan removes that restriction.
