01 · How Amazon EMR pricing works
What you pay for
- EMR on EC2: the EC2 instance price plus a per-instance EMR fee (for example $0.048/hour on m5.xlarge), per second with a 1-minute minimum.
- EMR Serverless: per vCPU-hour, GB-hour and extra storage; EMR on EKS: per vCPU and GB on top of EKS/EC2.
- EBS volumes, S3 storage and requests, data transfer, EMR Studio (no extra charge).
Common cost traps
- Long-running clusters left idle bill both EC2 and EMR fees.
- The EMR fee applies to Spot instances too, so savings are smaller than raw Spot discounts.
- Large EBS volumes on core nodes add up; HDFS replication triples storage.
Ways to reduce cost
- Use transient clusters or EMR Serverless and auto-termination.
- Use Spot for task nodes and Graviton instance types.
- Store data in S3 rather than HDFS and use managed scaling.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. No EMR Free Tier. New-plan accounts can pay from Free Tier credits.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover Amazon EMR?
EMR fees (on EC2, EKS and Serverless) and the EC2, EBS and S3 resources clusters use are eligible usage and are offset by credits, including Spot instances. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
Check my creditsExcluded charges & conditions
- Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
- AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
- Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
- Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.
Illustrative credit runway
Single-service examples from the supplied data, not your calculator result. Months = credit amount ÷ monthly cost, before credit expiry. Credits can expire before these theoretical months are used; coverage and other AWS services can shorten runway.
| Usage profile | Monthly estimate | $10,000 | $25,000 | $100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | $86.40 | 115.7 mo. | 289.4 mo. | 1,157.4 mo. |
| Medium | $2,277.60 | 4.4 mo. | 11.0 mo. | 43.9 mo. |
| Large | $9,373.20 | 1.1 mo. | 2.7 mo. | 10.7 mo. |
Small profile assumptions
Transient cluster: 1 primary + 2 core m5.xlarge, 4 hours/day | EC2 m5.xlarge: 360 instance-hours x $0.192 = $69.12; EMR fee m5.xlarge: 360 instance-hours x $0.048 = $17.28 | Total ~$86.40/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Medium profile assumptions
Long-running cluster: 1 primary m5.xlarge + 6 core m5.2xlarge 24/7 | EC2 m5.xlarge: 730 instance-hours x $0.192 = $140.16; EMR fee m5.xlarge: 730 instance-hours x $0.048 = $35.04; EC2 m5.2xlarge: 4,380 instance-hours x $0.384 = $1,681.92; EMR fee m5.2xlarge: 4,380 instance-hours x $0.096 = $420.48 | Total ~$2,277.60/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Large profile assumptions
20 x r5.2xlarge 24/7 plus primary m5.xlarge | EC2 r5.2xlarge: 14,600 instance-hours x $0.504 = $7,358.40; EMR fee r5.2xlarge: 14,600 instance-hours x $0.126 = $1,839.60; EC2 m5.xlarge: 730 instance-hours x $0.192 = $140.16; EMR fee m5.xlarge: 730 instance-hours x $0.048 = $35.04 | Total ~$9,373.20/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
04 · Questions
Amazon EMR pricing FAQ
What do I pay for an EMR cluster?
The EC2 instance price plus the EMR fee per instance-hour, plus EBS and S3. In us-east-1 an m5.xlarge is $0.192 + $0.048 per hour.
Is EMR Serverless cheaper?
For bursty jobs usually yes, because you pay only while jobs run. For steady 24/7 work, a right-sized cluster with Spot can be cheaper.
Do credits cover Spot nodes?
Yes. Spot and the EMR fee on Spot nodes are eligible usage.
Is there a free tier?
No.
