AWS Glue pricing calculator

ETL Jobs, Crawlers, DataBrew & Data Catalog. Estimate your costs using AWS list prices.

Estimates from AWS list prices, not an AWS quote. Discounts, taxes and credit terms may affect your bill.

01 · How AWS Glue pricing works

What you pay for

  • ETL jobs: $0.44 per DPU-hour (Flex $0.29), per second with a 1-minute minimum on Glue 2.0+; minimum 2 DPUs for Spark jobs.
  • Crawlers, interactive sessions, data quality, statistics and table optimisation at $0.44 per DPU-hour.
  • Data Catalog: $1 per 100,000 objects per month and $1 per million requests beyond the free tier; DataBrew per node-hour and per session.

Common cost traps

  • Default worker counts are often larger than the job needs.
  • Crawlers re-scanning large prefixes frequently add DPU-hours; schedule them less often or use event-based crawls.
  • Interactive sessions bill while idle until they time out.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Use Flex for non-urgent jobs and auto scaling for Spark jobs.
  • Use job bookmarks to process only new data.
  • Set idle timeouts on interactive sessions.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Always free on both plans: the first 1 M Data Catalog objects stored and 1 M requests per month. Jobs and crawlers have no free allowance.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover AWS Glue?

Glue ETL jobs, Flex jobs, crawlers, interactive sessions, DataBrew, Data Catalog storage and requests, data quality and optimisation are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

Excluded charges & conditions
  • Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
  • AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
  • AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
  • Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.

Single-service examples from the supplied data, not your calculator result. Months = credit amount ÷ monthly cost, before credit expiry. Credits can expire before these theoretical months are used; coverage and other AWS services can shorten runway.

Nightly ETL: 10 DPUs x 15 min x 30 days, 1 crawler 10 min/day | ETL DPU-hours: 75 DPU-hours x $0.44 = $33.00; Crawler DPU-hours: 10 DPU-hours x $0.44 = $4.40 | Total ~$37.40/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.

Medium profile assumptions

Hourly pipelines: 1,500 DPU-hours standard + 1,000 DPU-hours Flex, 200 interactive-session DPU-hours | ETL DPU-hours: 1,500 DPU-hours x $0.44 = $660.00; Flex DPU-hours: 1,000 DPU-hours x $0.29 = $290.00; Interactive sessions: 200 DPU-hours x $0.44 = $88.00 | Total ~$1,038.00/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.

Large profile assumptions

15,000 ETL DPU-hours, 5 M catalog objects (4 M beyond free), 100 DataBrew node-hours | ETL DPU-hours: 15,000 DPU-hours x $0.44 = $6,600.00; Catalog objects beyond free: 4,000,000 object-months x $0.00001 = $40.00; DataBrew nodes: 100 node-hours x $0.48 = $48.00 | Total ~$6,688.00/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
