01 · How Amazon Kinesis Video Streams pricing works
What you pay for
- Video streams: per GB ingested ($0.0085), per GB-month stored ($0.023), per GB consumed (GetMedia $0.0085, clips and HLS/DASH higher).
- WebRTC: per active signaling channel per month ($0.03), per million signaling messages ($2.25), per 1,000 TURN minutes ($0.12).
- Image extraction and data transfer out.
Common cost traps
- Storage grows with retention x bitrate x cameras; long retention dominates cost.
- HLS/DASH playback is billed per GB consumed.
- TURN relay minutes bill when peers cannot connect directly.
Ways to reduce cost
- Match retention to need and lower bitrate where acceptable.
- Use edge recording and upload only events.
- Use peer-to-peer WebRTC where networks allow to reduce TURN.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. No ongoing Kinesis Video Streams Free Tier in the data. New-plan accounts can pay from Free Tier credits.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover Amazon Kinesis Video Streams?
Kinesis Video Streams ingestion, storage, consumption and WebRTC signaling/TURN usage are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
Check my creditsExcluded charges & conditions
- Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
- AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
- Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
- Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.
Illustrative credit runway
Single-service examples from the supplied data, not your calculator result. Months = credit amount ÷ monthly cost, before credit expiry. Credits can expire before these theoretical months are used; coverage and other AWS services can shorten runway.
| Usage profile | Monthly estimate | $10,000 | $25,000 | $100,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | $45.76 | 218.5 mo. | 546.3 mo. | 2,185.3 mo. |
| Medium | $502.50 | 19.9 mo. | 49.8 mo. | 199.0 mo. |
| Large | $1,067.55 | 9.4 mo. | 23.4 mo. | 93.7 mo. |
Small profile assumptions
10 cameras at 1 Mbps 24/7 (about 330 GB each/month), 7-day retention | Data ingested: 3,300 GB x $0.0085 = $28.05; Storage (7 days): 770 GB-month x $0.023 = $17.71 | Total ~$45.76/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Medium profile assumptions
WebRTC: 5,000 signaling channels, 50 M signaling messages, 2 M TURN minutes | Active signaling channels: 5,000 channel-months x $0.03 = $150.00; Signaling messages: 50 million x $2.25 = $112.50; TURN streaming: 2,000 1,000 minutes x $0.12 = $240.00 | Total ~$502.50/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Large profile assumptions
100 cameras at 1 Mbps 24/7, 30-day retention, 10% of video consumed | Data ingested: 33,000 GB x $0.0085 = $280.50; Storage (30 days): 33,000 GB-month x $0.023 = $759.00; GetMedia consumption: 3,300 GB x $0.0085 = $28.05 | Total ~$1,067.55/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
