01 · How Amazon Neptune pricing works

What you pay for

  • Neptune Database: instance hours or Serverless NCU-hours ($0.1608 per NCU-hour), storage per GB-month, I/O per million on Standard (I/O-Optimized available).
  • Neptune Analytics: per memory-optimized NCU-hour by graph size (16 m-NCU = $0.48/hour); paused graphs bill a lower rate.
  • Backup storage, snapshot export, data transfer, Neptune ML (SageMaker charges).

Common cost traps

  • Serverless minimum NCUs bill every hour while the cluster exists.
  • Graph traversals that touch many vertices drive I/O costs on Standard storage.
  • Neptune Analytics graphs bill per hour while active, and still bill at a reduced rate while paused.
  • Neptune ML training and inference are billed as SageMaker usage.

Ways to reduce cost

  • Use I/O-Optimized if I/O dominates.
  • Delete or pause Analytics graphs when not in use; snapshot and restore for periodic analysis.
  • Use Graviton instances and right-size from CPU/memory metrics.

Free Tier & account eligibility

Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Neptune has offered a 30-day free trial for new Neptune customers (750 hours of t3/t4g.medium, 10 M I/O, 1 GB storage and backup). Check eligibility for new-plan accounts. Otherwise paid from Free Tier credits.

02 · AWS credits & runway

Do credits cover Amazon Neptune?

Neptune Database instance hours, Serverless NCU-hours, storage, I/O, backups and Neptune Analytics memory-optimized capacity are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.

  • AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
  • AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
  • Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.

04 · Questions

Amazon Neptune pricing FAQ

Database or Analytics?

Neptune Database is for transactional graph workloads; Neptune Analytics is an in-memory engine for fast analysis of large graphs. They are billed separately.

Is there a free tier?

A 30-day free trial for new Neptune customers, not an ongoing Free Tier.

Does Serverless scale to zero?

No. It scales between the minimum and maximum NCUs you set; the minimum bills while the cluster runs.

Do credits cover Neptune ML?

Neptune ML runs on SageMaker, so it is covered when SageMaker is covered by your credits.
