File, Volume & Tape Gateway. Estimate your costs using AWS list prices.

01 · How AWS Storage Gateway pricing works
What you pay for
- Data written to AWS: $0.01/GB, capped at $125 per gateway per month.
- Storage of volumes, snapshots and virtual tapes per GB-month in the S3 class used.
- FSx File Gateway per hour; tape retrieval and early-deletion fees in Glacier classes.
- Data transfer out from AWS to the gateway at internet egress rates.
Common cost traps
- Restoring or reading data back to on-premises is internet egress ($0.09/GB).
- Virtual tapes moved to Deep Archive have a 180-day minimum; Glacier Flexible 90 days.
- Cache disks on-premises must be sized correctly or reads fall through to AWS and add egress.
Ways to reduce cost
- Use the uploaded-bytes cap to estimate worst case; large daily writes cost at most $125 per gateway per month.
- Archive tapes to Deep Archive for long-term retention.
- Size local cache for the working set to reduce egress.
Free Tier & account eligibility
Free Tier depends on account age. Accounts created on or after 15 July 2025 get a $100 sign-up credit plus up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities; on the Free plan these last 6 months (or until used up), on the Paid plan unused Free Tier credits stay usable for 12 months from sign-up. Accounts created before 15 July 2025 keep the legacy Free Tier (12-month offers plus always-free offers). Always-free offers apply on both plans. Always free (legacy directory): the first 100 GB of data written per account per month. S3, FSx and Glacier storage behind the gateway follow their own Free Tier rules.
02 · AWS credits & runway
Do credits cover AWS Storage Gateway?
Storage Gateway charges (FSx File Gateway hours, uploaded bytes, volume and tape storage, retrieval) and the S3/FSx storage behind them are eligible usage and are offset by credits. General rules: credits only offset charges from the billing cycle in which they were applied onward (never past bills), they apply only to the services listed on the credit in Billing and Cost Management > Credits, they expire on the date shown there, and accounts on the AWS Free plan cannot receive Activate credits until they upgrade to the Paid plan.
Check my creditsExcluded charges & conditions
- On-premises hardware or hypervisor licences; the Storage Gateway hardware appliance purchase should be checked separately.
- Upfront payments for Savings Plans and Reserved Instances (All Upfront, and the upfront part of Partial Upfront). The recurring hourly fee of a No Upfront commitment is billed as normal usage and can be offset.
- AWS Marketplace charges (Activate credits make an exception for third-party foundation models used through Amazon Bedrock).
- AWS Enterprise Support, Enterprise On-Ramp, Unified Operations, resold support and partner-led support.
- Amazon Route 53 domain name registration and transfer fees.
- Taxes (sales, use, VAT and similar), AWS Professional Services, Training and Certification, Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, and any use for cryptocurrency mining.

Small profile assumptions
S3 File Gateway, 1 TB stored in S3 Standard, 300 GB uploaded per month | Data written (uploaded bytes): 300 GB x $0.01 = $3.00; S3 Standard storage: 1,024 GB-month x $0.023 = $23.55 | Total ~$26.55/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Medium profile assumptions
Volume Gateway 10 TB stored, 2 TB uploaded per month, plus 20 TB of virtual tapes in Glacier Flexible | Volume storage: 10,240 GB-month x $0.023 = $235.52; Uploaded bytes: 2,048 GB x $0.01 = $20.48; Tape archive (Glacier Flexible): 20,480 GB-month x $0.0036 = $73.73 | Total ~$329.73/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
Large profile assumptions
FSx File Gateway 24/7, Tape Gateway 200 TB Deep Archive, 20 TB uploaded per month (hits monthly cap) | FSx File Gateway: 730 hours x $0.69 = $503.70; Tapes in Deep Archive: 204,800 GB-month x $0.00099 = $202.75; Uploaded bytes (capped at 12,500 GB): 12,500 GB x $0.01 = $125.00 | Total ~$831.45/month, us-east-1 on-demand list prices, before Free Tier, taxes and support.
